H I S T O R Y

Roxanne's mother was a flighty, somewhat spoiled girl from Long Island, New York, who through much begging and pleading managed to convince her parents to send her off to art school in Greece after she got out of high school. While there, she fell hard for one of the locals, had a torrid love affair, and got engaged; however, she wasn't exactly expecting him to leave her at the altar, and once she decided to go on to Egypt (where they'd planned to honeymoon) and have fun without him, she certainly wasn't expecting the consequences of what they'd already done to come back and hit her with a positive pregnancy test.

Her parents, appalled at her actions, cut her off from any support, leaving her with little choice but to settle down, find a job, and try to get back on her feet. She did opt to keep her daughter, naming her Roxanne, but she was an inattentive parent at best, and once she finally started dating again, she had somewhat poor choice in men and went through a string of boyfriends whose reactions to her daughter ranged from mild distaste to outright hostility.

Roxanne, for her part, kept to herself and tried not to draw any more attention than she had to, since the attention was usually negative. She found a job at a small cafe as soon as she was old enough to work, and started quietly saving what she could in hopes of getting a decent education, getting out of Cairo, and getting her own life.

Although she still lives with her mother, she sees little of her, and is still saving up to move out as soon as she can. Although she still legally has her mother's surname, she plans on changing it to that of her father as soon as she moves out, and she already thinks of it as her real name.

Although she's never met her father, she likes to think he's different, and that when she gets an education and gets out of Cairo and gets her own life, maybe she'll even get to find him someday.

P E R S O N A L I T Y

Roxanne has learned by necessity how to smile and put on a chatty personality, because some people like people who smile and people who are liked get better tips. But she doesn't really feel it when she puts on the social butterfly mask. Roxanne has learned by necessity how to say nothing and avoid being noticed, because some people like people who don't annoy them and people who are liked are less likely to be hurt. But she doesn't really feel it when she puts that mask on, either.

Roxanne has learned how to be what she's not, but she still hasn't learned how to be herself. She simply acts as she thinks she'd expected to and does what is likely to earn her the approval of those around her. She's dimly aware that she spends too much time acting and not enough time trying to be who she really is - whoever that is - but she simply files that fact away for later use. She'll save it for when she's free.

And until then, she'll keep acting.
